Introduction

Six-frame cartoon. Bespectacled editor is sitting at a desk with her laptop. An authors stands in front of her desk. Frame 1: The author says, “You’re saying this isn’t a preface?” Bespectacled editor says, “No. A preface is where you’d explain why you wrote the book, describe its scope, give disclaimers—that kind of thing.” Frame 2: The author says, “So it’s a prologue?” Bespectacled editor says, “No. A prologue is usually narrative that gives context or sets the scene for the main story in a literary work.” Frame 3: The author says, “What is it, then?” Bespectacled editor says, “You said someone else wrote it, right? Someone respected in your field? And they wrote about how they know you and why people should read your book?” The author says, “Uh-huh.” Frame 4: Bespectacled editor says, “That’s a foreword.” The author says, “Ah! Gotcha” and leans over on the desk to write something on her paper. Frame 5: We see the author cross out the word “PREFACE” on her pages and scrawl F-O-R-W-A-R-D. Frame 6: The author turns to leave and says, “Thanks!” The editor, concerned about the misspelling, reaches her arm out and says, “No—wait!”
