App

Eight-frame cartoon. Frame 1: Bespectacled editor says to curly-haired editor, "Wanna kickstart my app?" Curly-haired editor says, "What does it do?" Frame 2: Bespectacled editor: "It pairs freelancers with projects." Curly-haired editor: "Aren’t there already apps like that?" Frame 3: Bespectacled editor: "This one's different. It uses a sophisticated algorithm to match people based on their 'time-sink index.' Frame 4: Bespectacled editor: "Using questionnaire responses, the app can identify people who fancy themselves editors but will never take the time to learn the craft…" Frame 5: Bespectacled editor: "…and pair them with projects where a middle manager will inevitably reverse all of the changes." Frame 6: Bespectacled editor: "That way they’ll waste each other’s time rather than ours." Curly-haired editor is reaching into her purse. Frames 7 and 8: Curly-haired editor winds up and throws a wad of cash at bespectacled editor, whose glasses are knocked off.

Markup

Bespectacled editor is in a job interview. Interviewer says, "We’re looking for a content curator who can double as a quality assurance officer for our copy." The editor reaches for a red pen on the interviewer's desk marks up for deletion "a content curator who can double as a quality assurance officer for our copy" and changes it to "an editor" so that the final text says "We're looking for an editor."

Frame 1: A robot works diligently at a computer. Two editors walk into the frame. Curly-haired editor says to bespectacled editor, "What…who…is that?" Bespectacled editor replies, "Oh. That's ReferenceBot." Frame 2: Bespectacled editor says, "I was spending so much time editing back matter, and the changes were mostly mechanical, so I built a robot to take care of it." Frame 3: Curly-haired editor says, "Great idea!" Bespectacled editor says, "Yeah, I have just one worry." The robot says, "JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS BORING AS SHIT."
